Nakia Dunn is a native of Fairfield, California where she attended Fairfield High School and was an outstanding basketball player and track & field athlete. She was recruited to attend KSU by former basketball Head Coach, Carol Washington-Clark and Assistant Coach Ervin Josey.
Nakia was an outstanding basketball player who performed at the highest level. She became a starter as a freshman and never looked back. She played the point guard and the shooting guard positions. During her four-year career, she earned many awards and made the All Time KSU record list in several basketball categories. She earned three Athletic Letters during her basketball career. She would have earned a fourth, but had a season ending injury, very early in her junior year.
She also earned three Athletic Letters in Cross Country during her freshman, sophomore and junior years. As a freshman, she received in cross country the “Most Heart Award”.
During the three full seasons, she was selected three times as the KSU Women’s Basketball Most Valuable Player. She was awarded the KSU Women’s Basketball Most Assist Award as a freshman and sophomore and she received the KSU Leading Rebound Award as a sophomore. During her senior year, she was selected for the SIAC First Team All-Conference.
Since KSU started in the NCAA era in the 1984-85 season, Nakia held the All-Time career assist record with 244 from 2002 to 2006. She is now second all-time on the assist list. She is the KSU career Free Throw leader with 348 made. Other top ten KSU categories include: Eighth with career Field Goals Made with 368; Sixth in Field Goal Attempts with 994; Second in Free Throw Attempts with 523; and Third in Steals with 241.
In the 2005-06 season, Nakia led the SIAC with 17.1 points per game. She was ranked #7 in NCAA Division II in scoring. Other honors she received in her senior year were making the national list as the #7 ranked on the “Best Performer’s in Black Sports” (Onnidan).
Nakia is listed in two KSU’s single season categories. She ranks #2 in Free Throws made with 141 and ranks #6 in Steals with 92.
After graduating from KSU in 2007, Nakia briefly played professionally for the LKS Club in Lodz, Poland which is in the FIBA Eurobasketball League.
Nakia currently lives in Clarksville, Tennessee and has been working for the Department of Veterans Affair for 11 years, as a Quality Assurance Oversight Specialist for the VA Central Office, Oversight Visit-Auditing Team. She assesses program administration and quality of service delivery of the Veteran Readiness and Employment Program at all Federal Regional Offices.
She is married to Jesse Day and has a 15-year-old daughter plus two adult stepchildren.
