TAKEMA WHITE

Takema White, is a native of Kankakee, Illinois (Kankakee High School). While in high school she played three sports, basketball, softball and volleyball. She decided to bring her talents to Kentucky State University after accepting a scholarship offer to play basketball by Coach Antoino Davis.

Immediately, Ms. White made an impact on the women’s basketball program. She was the starting point guard during her entire four seasons. Defensive was considered her specialty as it helped her earn many KSU, conference and national honors and records.

Ms. White is one of the few women athletes to make the ten KSU All-Time record list in several statistical categories in basketball. She led the team in assist and steals in a single season in each of her four years (1997 to 2001). This accomplishment places her #1 on the KSU All-Time record holder in steals with a total of 327. She is ranked #6 on the KSU list in Assist in a single season with 114 assists in 1999-2000 and #10 with 99 assists in the 1998-99 season.

Adding to Ms. White dominance in the KSU record books, she ranked #2 in steals in a Single Season with 107 steals in the 1999-2000 season and #7 with 92 steals in the 1998-1999 season. Finally, she ranked 7th in both Career Free Throws Made with 230 and Career Free Throws Attempts with 358 (1997-2001).

Ms. White earned 4 Athletic Letters in Women’s Basketball. Twice, she was selected the KSU Defensive Player of the Year in the 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 seasons. She earned the KSU Most Valuable Player in the 2000-2001 season.

In the SIAC, Ms. White earned several recognitions. She was selected to the Pre-season All-Conference Team three times in 1998, 1999 and 2000. In 1997, she earned SIAC All Rookie Team.

In only 22 games played in the 2000-2001 season, Ms. White was tied for 26th in Steals nationally. She finished with 68 steals for an average of 3.1 steals per game. Tameka was selected in 2001 to the Black College All-Star game.

As a freshman in 1997, Ms. White was a member of the KSU Volleyball team where she was playing the position as Setter. In her only season, she helped the team to win the SIAC league championship. She earned a KSU Athletic Letter for her performance.

Ms. White was an multi talent athlete. She was asked by the women’s softball Head Coach, Oscar Downs, to play softball in 1999. Again, in her only year as a softball player, she helped the KSU Softball team make history and put herself in the KSU Softball record books. The Softball team won their first ever SIAC Championship and it was the first championship in KSU history.

As a softball player, Ms. White is listed in the top 10 in three Softball single season record categories. She is listed as #1 with a .590 Batting Average. Her Slugging Percentage ranks her #7 with a .869 average. She is ranked 5th with 5 Triples. These statistics still stands today. She may be considered one of the best multi female athlete in school history. She earned an Athletic Letter in softball, making her one of the few men or women athletes to accomplish this in three different sports in the history of KSU.

In 2002, Ms. White was selected to the United States team to play several games in China. This includes the Chinese National team and an expansion professional Chinese team.

Upon graduation, Ms. White continued using her athletic skills in coaching and volunteering to help young athletes. She has coached for over 20 years, in boys and girls’ basketball from AAU 14-under, High School and in Recreational league. Also in High School, she coaches Volleyball and Softball. She coached at Farmville Central High School and Wake Forest-Rolesville High School in North Carolina. She also coached High School in her home town of Kankakee, Illinois. Her volunteering continues at the Kankakee YMCA in basketball. In 2010, she her District High School Coach of the Year in basketball and was able to have four players earning NCAA Division I and II basketball scholarships.

Ms. White’s was an assistant coach at Saint Augustine College under Coach Antonio Davis after graduating from KSU.

Ms. White is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (KSU – Alpha Pi Chapter). She is currently employed with the Rich Township (Illinois) School District as Dean of Students/Educator. She resides in Homewood, Il. and is the proud mother of two children, Jakir (son) and Taja (daughter).
