Alvon Brown, was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He moved to Kankakee, Illinois (Kankakee High School). He was recruited to play football at KSU by Assistant Coaches Jones and McGriff, under Head Coach George Smalls.
Alvon may be considered the best running back in KSU history. His career has been more than remarkable. He left KSU as its all-time leading rusher and scorer in the modern era, amassing a remarkable 5,137 yards and 56 touchdowns. Not only did he lead the SIAC in rushing during each of his first three seasons, he also shattered the NCAA Division II records for rushing yards in a half (229) and in a game (405). Both achievements came in a legendary performance against Kentucky Wesleyan University in 2000. Alvon’s consistency was on display with another standout game as he ran for 349 rushing yards against Morris Brown in 1998.
Despite limited touches in Alvon’s senior year due to a new coaching staff and offensive system, he remained the focus point of the KSU offense. Throughout his career, he was the main offensive weapon on squads that featured several All-Americans under Head Coach George Smalls. His legacy at KSU is further cemented by numerous accolades, some of which are missing from the record books due to incomplete documentation. Nonetheless, his stellar performances and record setting feats have left an enduring mark in KSU football history.
Alvon’s excellence was recognized with an impressive array of awards and honors throughout his collegiate tenure. He earned the Don Hansen All-American Honorable Mention in 1999 and was twice named to the Daktronics NCAA Division II South Region team in both 1998 and 1999. His dominance on the field was further underscored by back-to-back George H. Hobson Offensive Running Back of the Yard awards in 1999 and 2000, as well being honored as the 100% Wrong Club Marion E. Jackson SIAC Offensive Player of the Year for those same two seasons.
Alvon’s unrivaled performance led him to capture both the SIAC Player of the Year and the SIAC Offensive Player of the Year titles in 1999 and 2000, in addition to his selection to the First Team All-SIAC in those years.
Alvon’s impact did not waver as he closed out his career. In 2001, he received the Budweiser Gateway Classic Football Most Valuable Prayer award. He also garnered KSU Running Back MVP honors every year of his career and was crowded KSU Football MVP in 1999. Statistically, his seasons were a testament to his consistency and greatness as he posted 1,408 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, as a freshman in 1998; 1,344 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns along with All-American honors in 1999; having his best season with 1,536 yards and 20 touchdowns as a junior in 2000; and finishing with 849 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in his senior campaign.
With the number of rushing yards Alvon obtained, it placed him as number one ranked rushing runner back in the statistical categories at KSU. He is first in career rushing yards, career rushing attempts with 779, and for total touchdowns.
Despite incomplete record keeping at KSU, Alvon’s accomplishments and the legacy he left on KSU’s football program stand as a beacon for the future generations, ensuring he remains etched in the school’s history as one of its all-time greats.
Alvon currently lives in Texas and is employed with FedEx. He retired from Kankakee Sheriff Department (Illinois). He is married to Yolonda Brown and they have five children, Aarion, Aaliyah, Aarianna, Ariel, and Alvon Jr.
